How do Fence Topper Panels Work

Fence topper panels are a simple yet effective way to add height, style or privacy to fencing. They’re becoming an increasingly popular option, particularly as more people turn to reliable wooden slotted posts. These posts make installation straightforward and give your fence a neat, finished appearance.

Topper Panels Using Slotted Fence Posts

Here’s how it works: first, your wooden slotted posts are installed. Then, standard fence panels are slotted in between the posts, dropping securely into the grooves. Once these are in place, your fence topper panels sit directly on top of the main panels, also within the slotted post system. The result is a clean, secure finish that allows you to create a completely unique look using off-the-shelf panel types.

Topper panels are usually installed at the same time as the rest of the fence. This ensures everything fits together neatly and securely. Retrofitting topper panels can be difficult, as the posts typically run flush with the top of the panels or only protrude slightly above. In many cases, there simply isn’t enough space to slot a topper panel in without altering or replacing the posts.

It’s important to use slotted posts that come with a long guarantee, as they’ll provide the strength and longevity needed to support both the fence panels and the toppers. For extra security and stability, all panels, including the toppers should be screwed into the posts once positioned. This helps prevent movement over time and gives your fence a more robust finish.  Read our blog on the importance of screwing fence panels to posts.

While some systems rely on clips to attach topper panels to posts, this method is often prone to failure and doesn’t offer the same neat appearance. A slotted post system with properly secured panels gives a far more professional and reliable result.

Fence topper panels are ideal for adding a decorative touch, improving privacy all while using standard fencing components.

Using Fence Topper Panels to Extend Fence Height

Fence topper panels are a simple and effective way to add height to an existing fence, offering extra privacy, improved security and a decorative touch. Available in styles like trellis, slatted and solid panels, they are typically fitted above standard fence panels.

Topper panels can be installed using extension brackets or by adding extensions to existing slotted posts. However, if you have the option, we always recommend installing them into full-height, one-piece slotted posts with no cuts. This method provides a neater appearance and better long-term stability.

If you're adding toppers to an existing fence, it's wise to choose an open-style design with large gaps, such as a trellis panel with large spaces or wide-slat panel. These allow wind to pass through more easily, helping reduce wind resistance and lowering the risk of damage or breakage in bad weather.

As always, check local regulations first, as there may be limits on the overall height of your fence, including any topper panels.
